If you’re in middle school or you are the parent of a 7th or 8th grader, keep reading. High school may be the next step, but college is not far off! College can be overwhelming for many families, however there IS money on the table to help. Here are some common questions about applying for 21st Century Scholars.

What is the 21st Century Scholars Program?

Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars program offers income-eligible Hoosier students up to four years of paid tuition at an eligible Indiana college or university after they graduate from high school, dependent upon financial need.

When Is the Deadline for 21st Century Scholars?

June 30th at the end of a student’s 8th grade year.

This deadline will not be extended. Don’t miss it!

Can I Apply for 21st Century Scholars in High School or College?

No.

7th grade is the earliest students can apply, and students must apply by June 30th of their 8th grade year to determine eligibility. However, students in foster care may apply for 21st Century Scholars after 8th grade.

 

Am I Eligible?

The basics:

    • U.S Citizen or U.S National | U.S Permanent Resident with I-151, I-551 or I-551C  | A non-citizen with a certain designation
    • Be enrolled in 7th or 8th at an Indiana public or private school accredited by the Indiana Department of Education.
    • Be a member of a family that meets the income eligibility requirements

I Think My Family Doesn’t Qualify, Should I Still Apply?

YES!

It never hurts to apply, even if you think you aren’t eligible. And, we understand financial situations change. If you applied during 7th grade, but your financial situation has changed, fill out a new application in 8th grade.

What Do I Need to Apply to 21st Century Scholars?

The basics include student and family information, such as:

    • Social security number, date of birth & address
    • Previous year gross income amounts, and
    • Valid email address

How Do I Apply for 21st Century Scholars?

There are two ways to apply:  

1. Online here.

2. You can ask your school counselor to help you with Scholar Enrollment Worksheet.

When Do I Find Out After Applying for 21st Century Scholars?

You will be notified with an initial decision within 1 – 2 days.

However, all income information is verified through the Indiana Department of Revenue, so the initial decision is subject to change, based on that verification.

What if I don’t Qualify?

The State of Indiana offers several financial aid programs, so even if you don’t qualify for 21st Century Scholars, there are a lot of options!
